6 July 2018 ORLANDO, FL – Fifty-five years ago, on July 2, 1963, San Francisco Giants right-hander Juan Marichal and Milwaukee Braves left-hander Warren Spahn staged a pitching matchup for the ages.   Over four hours that afternoon, the 27-year-old Marichal and Spahn, age 42, matched each other scoreless inning for scoreless inning at San Francisco’s wind-blown Candlestick Park.   What made the game – won by Giants, 1-0, on a Willie Mays home run in the bottom of the 16th inning – so extraordinary is that the two future Hall of Fame pitchers were the only ones used.
